Tyler Owen

Senior Director, Product Management, Managed Security Services

Tyler Owen is the Sr. Director, Product Management, Managed Security Services for VikingCloud and is based in Richmond, VA. As part of the Product Management team, Tyler is responsible for VikingCloud’s Managed Security Services and Endpoint Security solutions.  

Tyler has 20 years of global information security and product management experience in numerous industries for public, private, and government organizations. While working for a Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) provider, he managed deployments, training, and integrations for global customers. Tyler’s experience also includes building multiple security systems and security operations centers, managing sales engineering teams, and building a cybersecurity customer portal as a Product Manager.

Tyler shares his expertise and knowledge with others by writing articles and reports for VikingCloud, industry publications, and Medium.com (an open publishing platform) about security technology and products he is testing or implementing. He is also a frequent expert speaker at events such as Gartner and other industry-specific conferences.

Tyler holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a master’s in information security.  He also taught Security Information and Event Management to graduate students for 4 years as an adjunct professor at Lewis University.

Outside VikingCloud, Tyler is on the go with two teen boys and their activities – soccer and swimming. He also enjoys doing woodworking, home improvement projects, and working on various technology projects.

Q: What gets you most excited/passionate about your job right now?

A: Building solutions for a wide variety of customers and setting the direction to have a great impact.  I work with an amazing team who are always willing to collaborate to reach a common goal – creating value for our customers.  This industry is fast-moving and requires a lot of innovation and technical ability. Every member of the team possesses a unique expertise and is passionate about their work - it’s energizing and inspiring to work with them. I feel fortunate to be a part of the innovation that is helping our customers ensure their organizations are secure and compliant.

Q: What is the primary challenge prospective clients are experiencing when you first speak to them?

A: Many clients approach us feeling overwhelmed due to the lack of a standardized approach for managing their various locations. In a distributed environment where everything differs, providing support becomes significantly more time-consuming, leading to delays in restoring site functionality. One of our primary objectives is to help clients standardize their networks. This not only simplifies the support process but also makes it more comprehensible for everyone involved.

Q: If you could give one piece of advice to VikingCloud customers, what would it be?

A: Compliance is a great starting point for security, but it is just that - a starting point. Implementing a strong security program is not just a checkbox activity, but rather the best way to protect yourself and your brand. Many organizations, though, don’t have the resources to handle this alone – especially in today’s ever changing threat landscape. Which is why I also recommend that they partner with a service provider. This helps ensure they can implement the best security posture to withstand the worst attacks and protect their business.
